The Icons of the Flats

Permit. Tarpon. Bonefish. Snook. Four legendary species that define saltwater fly fishing—and the reason anglers from around the world journey to Xcalak.

The Ghost

Permit

Known for their sharp eyesight and frustrating selectivity, they’ve earned a reputation as the “holy grail” of the flats. Anglers travel the world for a single opportunity—and when it happens, the moment is electric.

Behavior & Habitat
Permit cruise the shallow flats, tailing as they feed on crabs and shrimp. They’re famously spooky—vanishing at the slightest mistake. And even when you connect, their soft mouths make them tough to keep pinned. Powerful and stubborn in the fight, permit carry an air of mystery that keeps anglers endlessly obsessed.

The Challenge
Stealth, accuracy, and timing matter. Permit demand perfect casts, quick adjustments, and nerves of steel. They will test your patience—and reward your persistence.

Seasonality
Permit can be found year-round in Xcalak, with excellent opportunities across the seasons.

The Silver King

Tarpon

Known for their acrobatics and brute strength, tarpon are the fish of a lifetime. Few experiences compare to watching a 60+ pounder cartwheel across the flats.

Behavior & Habitat
Juvenile tarpon hold in lagoons and river mouths, while migratory giants move through during the warmer months. They are ambush predators, often spotted rolling or laid up in quiet backwaters.

The Challenge
Once hooked, tarpon deliver blistering runs and aerial displays. Keeping calm, bowing to the jump, and trusting your knots are all part of the fight.

Seasonality
In Xcalak, smaller resident tarpon are available year-round. Larger migratory fish are more common in late spring through summer.

The Grey Ghost

Bonefish

Bonefish are the classic introduction to flats fishing. Known for their speed and numbers, they’re accessible yet endlessly fun. Hooking one means instant, line-melting runs.

Behavior & Habitat
Bonefish tail and school in shallow flats and grassy edges, especially in the bay and lagoons. Their silvery bodies can be hard to spot until they tip up to feed.

The Challenge
They’re fast, alert, and unforgiving of sloppy presentations. But with good light and a clean cast, bonefish provide constant action and excitement.

Seasonality
Bonefish thrive year-round in Xcalak’s waters, offering consistent opportunities for anglers of all skill levels.

The Mangrove Ghost

Snook

Often overlooked but never underappreciated, snook are ambush predators with explosive strikes. Their golden sides and bucket mouths make them a favorite for those exploring mangrove channels.

Behavior & Habitat
Snook haunt river mouths, mangrove roots, and shaded edges. They are patient hunters, waiting in structure-rich environments to surprise prey.

The Challenge
They hit hard and run for cover, demanding quick reactions and strong leaders. Landing a big snook requires equal parts speed and finesse.

Seasonality
Snook are resident year-round in Xcalak, offering variety and surprise in between permit or tarpon shots.
