Our Story

From Colorado Rivers
to Caribbean Flats

Jesse Colten began his guiding career on the trout rivers of Colorado. But his eyes soon turned to saltwater—a wild place where culture, challenge, and big fish awaited. After a decade of guiding fresh water, he found what he was looking for: Xcalak—a tiny fishing village of just a few hundred people at the southern tip of the Yucatán peninsula.

Breathing New Life into Tierra Maya

Jesse discovered Tierra Maya Lodge in 2019 —a modest beachfront property complete with a 200-foot pier—and saw potential. He saw more than just a lodge—it was an ideal launching point for a saltwater fly-fishing dream. With a vision in mind, he converted it into The XFlats a casual, community-driven lodge with access to the pristine flats of Chetumal Bay.

Where People Come Together

From the start, Jesse placed importance on genuine connection—between guides, chefs, and guests. Tierra Maya’s restaurant, The Fish Bar, brings locals and visiting anglers together over fresh seafood and laughter. Evenings buzz with camaraderie: folks gather every evening to enjoy dinner, swap fly stories, tie knots, and celebrate the day’s catches.
